Our Family Story

House of Hearing Inc. is a family run local business applying the “Golden Rule”

And a simple philosophy….” We shall not pass this way but once. Any kindness that we can do, let us do it now.” Founder James A. Nevins started his hearing aid career in Lancaster back in 1968. He had become aware of hearing loss at a very early age because his grandmother, who he was very close to, had slowly lost her hearing over time. Her first hearing aids were fitted “in the home” and the entire family saw a big improvement with her hearing. Jim’s father had suggested hearing health care as a gratifying and fulfilling profession. As they say, the rest is history…Jim too saw the wonderful light come back to his grandmother and he developed a lifelong passion for helping the hearing impaired. He committed himself to intense training and course work to fully understand all aspects of hearing loss, testing and technology. So dedicated to his profession, Jim completed advanced training and was one of the first in the United States to earn the prestigious National Board Certification in Hearing Instruments Sciences.

1968 proved to be a memorable year for Jim. Shortly after starting his own company (originally named Lancaster Hearing Aid Center) Jim received a phone call and request for hearing aid information from Jeanne Kraft. He was soon privileged to fit hearing aids to Jeanne’s mother as well as grandmother. Jim recognized Jeanne’s compassion and understanding of hearing loss and knew she had the same commitment to helping people. She soon became Jim’s irreplaceable receptionist and manager. By the 1980s the hearing aid company had grown to 52 employees with offices throughout central Ohio and within the Lazarus department stores.

Jim and Jeanne fell in love and were married in 1992. As so often happens, grandchildren Michael and Mark and Alison, soon influenced a re-evaluation of priorities. The center was permanently scaled down to one highly efficient, ‘’Family Run” office in Lancaster with exceptionally high standards of quality, integrity and personalized service.

Mark J. Kraft, Jeanne’s son, joined the firm in 1976,devoting himself to refining his techniques as an exceptionally well trained and skilled repair technician offering Ohio’s only “in-house’’ repair service and helping patients through those “emergency’’ repair situations. Mark also is Board Certified in Hearing Instrument Sciences. Mark’s wife rounded out the team in 1986. She is the office manager, doing everything to keep the office running from day-to-day. Mark’s son, Mark Taylor joined the firm in 2008.

Jim and Jeanne and their entire family have committed themselves to creating a warm hometown environment combined with an old-fashion way of care and concern. The focal point of their effort is extraordinary service and quality that knows no shortcuts.

The entire staff at House of Hearing warmly opens their arms and hearts to invite you into their family. House of Hearing does the most to put your needs first.

Update: Jeanne Kraft Nevins passed away August 11, 2015- She will be fondly remembered by all.

When you choose to test drive any style hearing aid with a risk-free 30-day at-home trial, if we fail to live up to your expectations for any reason, we will refund 100% of your investment plus an additional $100 for your time.

When it comes to your hearing, your choice of a hearing health care professional is one of the most important decisions you’ll make. Since a hearing aid can’t be prescribed like eyeglasses, the proper hearing aid recommendation and fitting is highly dependent on the judgment and skill of the professional selecting the instrument. We test your hearing, select and dispense the hearing instrument best suited to your personal, professional, cosmetic and financial needs.
